these are swiss,and a family thing.. we used to just make them at xmas, but that is silly

shankeli (makes lots)
6 eggs
1.5 cups sugar
1.5 sticks of butter (room temp)
5 cups flour
juice and zest of a small lemon
powdered sugar
small container of shortening

beat the eggs
separately add the sugar to the butter
combine eggs with butter mixture, add lemon, add flour one cup at a time
the dough will be stiff at the end
chill overnight

on floured surface, roll out dough to just under 1/8 in thick, cut into small narrow rectangles, cut small slit in middle, tuck one end thru to form a twist

fry at 400f till golden, dust w/powdered sugar while still warm
store in tins (i needed three biggish ones)

this works best with multiple people, assembly line style
